Open Board Meetings - Thursdays, 9pm

Every Thursday we have an open board meeting at 9pm in the basement of WLH. We encourage you to come with ideas for this semester!

Greek Language Tables - Fridays, 12pm

Come join us for lunch at Calhoun on Fridays, anytime between 12pm and 1:30pm. It's a great opportunity for learners to practice speaking Greek and for natives to help students learn the Greek language.

April 23 - Lunch with Greek Consul, Aghi Baltas

Please join us tomorrow from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm for lunch with Aghi Baltas, the Consul General of Greece in the JE fellows lounge (located next to the JE dining hall). It will be a great opportunity to meet one of the most important Greek officials in the US.

April 13 - Master's Tea with chef Michael Psilakis followed by Greek Dinner in the Residential Colleges

In conjunction with Silliman College the Hellenic Society will be co-hosting a Master's Tea with famous Greek-American chef Michael Psilakis. That Evening Mr. Psilakis' Greek recipes will be served in all of the Residential College Dining Halls with a special dinner for Hellenic Society Members and Silliman students with the chef in the Silliman College dining hall.

Michael Psilakis went from being a waiter at TGI Fridays to an internationally acclaimed "rock star" chef. Growing up in Long Island, Psilakis didn't learn about cooking through culinary school but rather at the side of his Greek mother. One of his major goals is to put Greek food on the culinary map and so far he has been doing a very good job The young chef currently runs many highly successful restaurants in New York City including Anthos, one of only two Greek restaurants in the world to have a Michelin Star. Most recently he has come out with a new book "How to Roast a Lamb," appeared on the popular TV show "Iron Chef" and has cooked a special Greek meal at the White House for the Obamas' Greek Independence Day Reception. He frequently appears on The Food Network and last year he was deemed "Chef of the Year" by Esquire Magazine. He was also awarded Food & Wine's Best New Chef distinction, was named "Chef of the Year" by Bon Appetit  and was nominated for A-List Chef by Bravo TV. His numerous restaurants have also won several awards.

April 4 - Easter Celebration

CHURCH
On Saturday some members will attend local church services at St. Basil's Greek Orthodox Church (1 Tower Lane, New Haven CT 06516-1715). St. Basil's is a 15 minute walk from central campus. 

For those who wish to attend Saint Barbara's Greek Orthodox Church in Orange the Hellenic Society has arranged a bus that will depart from Phelps Gate at 10:10 pm. Please come on time. The bus will leave church at 12:15 and will return to campus around 12:45 am. 

AFTER CHURCH SATURDAY NIGHT/ SUNDAY EARLY MORNING CELEBRATION
After Church the Hellenic Society will be hosting a party at the newly opened Atlas Greek Restaurant at 21 Temple Street (across from Criterion Cinemas). Starting at 12:30 am there will be a $10 all you can eat Greek food Buffet and 2 for 1 drink specials. Bring your friends!

SUNDAY AFTERNOON 
Our traditional feast will be help from 11:30pm to 3:30pm in the courtyard of Ezra Stiles Residential College (enter behind Barnes & Nobles). Greek dancing, delicious food, great company, and two whole lambs on the spit! The even is free and open to everyone. Bring your friends!

February 28 - Cooking Workshop

This weekend the Hellenic Society will be hosting a home cooked Greek dinner at the Pierson kitchen.  Sunday we'll start cooking at 2:30 with the intention of eating at about 6:00.  If you're interested in learning how to cook, feel free to come by at 2:30 and Nikos will be happy to give lessons.  Even if you can't make it, definitely come by at 6:00 to join us for dinner!

January 20 - Dinner with Katy Romanou

Please join us for a dinner and discussion this Wednesday, January 20th with Dr.Katy Romanou at 5:30 in the Jonathan Edwards Fellow's Lounge. Jonathan Edwards college is located at 68 high street. 

Katy Romanou teaches musicology at the University of Athens, the Greek Open University and the Athens Conservatory of Music. Her research focuses on recent Greek music history.

October 28 - "OCHI Day" - Dinner with Konstantina Maragkou

We would like to invite you to a dinner and informal discussion about Greece's role in the Second World War with Professor Konstantina Maragkou in honor of the October 28th celebration. The dinner will take place this Wednesday in the Trumbull College Fellow's Lounge at 5.30 pm.
The Fellow's Lounge can be accessed through the dining hall of Trumbull College (241 Elm Street).

Konstantina Maragkou is currently a Post-Doctoral Associate and Lecturer of Hellenic Studies at the Macmillan Center teaching courses in modern Greek and European history. Her research interests include twentieth century world history and modern Greek history with special emphasis on Greece's foreign relations in the post-WWII era. In Fall 2009 she is teaching "Greece in the 20th Century" and "History of European Integration;" in the spring she will be teaching "Cold War in Europe"
and "Occupied Europe during WWII."

October 15 - Dinner with Ali Hakan Altinay, world Fellow from Turkey

You are all invied to a dinner hosted by the Hellenic Society with Ali Hakan Altinay, a 2009 World Fellow from Turkey. The dinner will be held from 6pm to 7pm this Thursday, October 15th in the Trumbull Fellow's Lounge. If you are not on the Yale meal plan system you can pay for your dinner at the cashier at the entrance to the Trumbull dining hall. As director of Turkey’s Open Society Foundation since 2001, Altinay has encouraged Turkey’s evolution toward a more open society by focusing on European Union accession and the aspirations of the middle class. He helped found the Independent Commission on Turkey, a high-level body which contributed to the EU’s decision to open membership negotiations with Turkey, as well as several think tanks and advocacy groups dedicated to reform agendas in the social, educational, and judicial spheres. Previously, Altinay served as regional director for both the International Research & Exchanges Board and Pathfinder International. He is widely published in the Turkish and International press.

April 30 - A Night of Poetry and Music

This Thursday, the Hellenic Society cordially invites you to a night of poetry and music. Yale undergraduate and graduate students will read and discuss pieces of their favorite Greek poets. The night will have two special guests:

Achilleas Liarmakopoulos, of the School of Music, will play for us in the piano and the trombone.

Elisa Gonzalez '11, poet and finalist of the 2009 Glascock Poetry Competition, will recite to us some of her poems, among them the highly acclaimed "Greek Men".

Come and recite your favorite poems, even poems you have written yourselves! We hope you can make it to this very special event! See you all this Thursday.

April 26 - HESO vs LASO Soccer Game!

THIS Monday, at 4pm, the Hellenic Society Spartans will take on the "LASitos" of LASO (Latin American Students Association).
The game will be 7on7, and consist of two 30 mins. halves. Each team has unlimited substitutions. We are looking for players and fans. We will be meeting at PWG at 3:25pm on Monday, and we'll take the 3:30 bus to the IM fields. Fans are welcome (actually encouraged) to follow!

March 27 - LUMINA - ISO Cultural Show

It's the Hellenic Society's tradition to participate every year in ISO's cultural show, this year known as LUMINA (formerly called Kaleidoscope). There will be many performances (dancing, acting, etc) from a variety of groups. Come enjoy the show and clap with the Greeks while they are doing their tricks!
